Seasonal Affective Disorder: Attack It!
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, most often emerging during the fall and winter months when sunlight exposure decreases. Symptoms typically include low mood, fatigue, increased sleep, changes in appetite (especially cravings for carbohydrates), and difficulty concentrating. Natural treatments for SAD focus on restoring balance through lifestyle and environmental changes. Light therapy is one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical approaches, using special lamps that mimic natural sunlight to regulate melatonin and serotonin levels. Regular outdoor exercise, even on cloudy days, helps boost mood and energy. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, eating a nutrient-rich diet high in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, and practicing mindfulness or prayer can also support emotional well-being. Additionally, spending time in nature and socializing with supportive friends or family can help counteract isolation and lift the spirit during darker months.
